Puke Ariki

Puke Ariki’s central library, five community libraries, mobile library, museum and visitor information centre connect Taranaki residents and out-of-region visitors to a wealth of knowledge, exhibitions, experiences and resources.
Puke Ariki aimed to extend its reach by creating a digital doorway. Enabling users to virtually experience the museum and library's wealth of knowledge, resources and exhibits as if they were walking through its doors.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of user needs, as well as the objectives and concerns of stakeholders from the New Plymouth District Council and local Iwi (Maori tribe), we delved deep into their perspectives and challenges.
The project kicked off with a series of interviews conducted at various community libraries and the museum itself. This primary research served as the foundation for crafting an initial strategy for the website's design and development.

The design elements were curated to embody Puke Ariki's unique cultural identity. A focus on integrating Maori language, and the traditional symbolism of the kupenga (fishing net) served to highlight the museum's native heritage.
In our pursuit of a user-friendly interface, simplicity emerged as a core design principle. Our in-depth research and analysis of past site analytics enabled us to pinpoint the key information that users most frequently sought. Consequently, we crafted a contemporary navigation system that prioritized ease of access to critical details such as opening hours, library login, and search functions.

The new website strengthened Puke Ariki’s role as a hub for Taranaki’s culture, heritage, and ideas. The seamless integration of the Maori language and local elements enhanced the brand's identity and respect in the community.
Post-launch analytics saw increased engagement not just from locals, but also from out-of-town visitors interested in the featured exhibitions and events. Users praised the accessibility of information and the seamless integration of cultural elements, enhancing their online experience significantly.
